What is Gem of Amara and why should I be reading it?

This is where I discuss pop culture and what matters to me about it. Most of this tends to be about television, the medium nearest and dearest to my heart, but there are a fair few film takes as well. The financial incentives of a lot of pop culture writing online leads to everyone writing about the same five things that they may not even be passionate about, and hopefully you’ll always feel like my work on here comes from a place of caring about the subject matter. Along with my more general takes, current ongoing features include my regular reviews of Lost (a show I love from start to finish and everyone agrees with me on this!), and “TV Unspooled”, where I write an episode from a TV show I’ve never seen before. Last year, I wrote a lot about Star Wars, but this is resting as we all need a rest from Star Wars.

One of my absolute favorite newsletters out there is by my friend Grace, who publishes under the moniker Gem of Amara. She’s a sharp thinker on TV and film, and even if I am sick of hearing about Star Wars, she’s one of my favorite writers about Star Wars.

Who is behind this?

Hi, I’m Grace Robertson. My pop culture writing has occasionally appeared in Vanity Fair. In my other life, I write about football (or soccer, if you must) analytics for StatsBomb and other places, but this newsletter has nothing to do with that. I’ve long had a lot of thoughts about pop culture, and I’d like to think of myself as a pretty good writer, so hopefully you’ll enjoy what I have to say here.

Schedule

The newsletter is currently publishing every Monday. There might be occasions where I’m running late or have a hectic week, but I’ll try my best to keep them to a minimum.

Let’s go to work.

P.S. if you’re wondering where the name comes from, it’s a magical ring on Buffy the Vampire Slayer that makes vampires impervious to sunlight and getting staked in the heart. I just thought it sounded cool.
